My dad’s going to be ok. The triple bypass surgery was a success. Long recovery ahead. It’s going to be a quiet winter of reflection.

My dad is getting open heart surgery on Monday, so I’m leaving tomorrow to go see him before the surgery.

I’m turning 39 in December and I gotta say that so far a helluva lot more shit gets thrown my way in middle age than it did in my youth. But I also feel a lot more capable to deal with the shit than I did when I was younger. So I guess it all evens out.

So my dad had a mild heart attack yesterday. He’s fine, it was very mild and he’s in the hospital for observation and will be released tomorrow.

It’s a shock because he’s had such a healthy lifestyle forever - exercised throughout his life, eats very healthy, never smoked, doesn’t drink, hates junk food and sweets. He’s 72. But, both of his parents died of heart problems. Try as we might, we can’t just run away from our genes.

He lives in Northern Ontario, I live in Vancouver, BC. I told my mom that I should visit this weekend — he’s my father, he had a heart attack and I should visit him, right?  Well, they were both insisting that I don’t visit.

My mom said he’d be “disappointed” if I visited him.

My first response was “What the hell?” Confusion. Hurt, too, of course. But then I thought, well, it doesn’t matter what I feel or what I want, it’s what he wants. And, what he wants right now is to not see me. Well, okay then.

I blame my father for the wasted years
We hardly talked
I never thought I would forget this hate
Then a phone call made me realize I’m wrong ”

Emptyage: Generation X Doesn't Want to Hear It

Earlier generations have weathered recessions, of course; this stall we’re in has the look of something nastier. Social Security and Medicare are going to be diminished, at best. Hours worked are up even as hiring staggers along: Blood from a stone looks to be the normal order of things “going…

Thanks, Steve.

Posting designs like this one makes me paranoid, because I can’t shake the feeling that it’s not original. I enjoyed the process regardless, but please let me know if somebody else beat me to the idea!

Thoughts?

Well, I’ve changed the course of music five or six times. What have you done except fuck the president?
